I decided to go outside for a walk, purchase something from the shop and have something in the SU where there should be noise surroundings. As soon as I stepped outside I instantly felt quite lonely, scared and isolated; as I didn't have a guide to rely on like when I was blind I was worried I might embarrass myself in front of someone by not understanding what they were saying. Another thing I was aware of is that I could not hear cars. This was quite scary when having to cross roads as although you can see them coming; you rely on them a lot more than you think. I found quite conscious in the shop as I couldn't really hear anything bar slightly muffled music and it literally took me ages to have the confidence to pay for the little chocolate bar I was paying for! I don't know if this is because I felt like a phony or because I knew I wasn't going to be able to have a conversation with her though. At all times during these two experiments I wanted to make sure everyone was being completely respectful! I just smiled said Hi and then kept my head down. I found it strange walking around being unable to listen to music; I felt like I was in my own world with just me and my thoughts. It wasn't that it was massively unpleasant it just made me feel very isolated.
When in the SU this was only amplified, I managed to get a cup of tea with the same nervousness as before but found I just isolated myself and sat in the corner. Although people learn to overcome this language barrier slightly, you can visually see and feel the impact this lack of communication has. It's like your looking up onto everyone else through water. I then walked home and felt the afternoon feeling quite low. Louise said people often overlook sensory loss and say that she is lucky not to be in a wheelchair. I can't even imagine how difficult it has to live with either or. I really hope that in our piece we can make the audience feel this emotional impact so that it causes empathy and not sympathy. The results of these two exercises have not just aided in the classroom but will also stay with me for the rest of my life!
